Farming News & Events

News and Events of interest to the farming community

Welcome to the first SWARM Hub newsletter. This bulletin will aim to bring you all the new information that is featured on the RDPE funded SWARM Hub site ( ); let you know what is happening with the other SWARM projects, and keep you up to date with what’s going on in your area.

What’s new on the site?

Precision Farming – Farmers can all potentially benefit from using precision farming at some level. With the growing interest in GPS, these pages guide you through the steps needed to farm more precisely on your farm, and highlights some of the available options.

Soil testing – Livestock farmers could save hundreds of pounds by knowing and optimising their soil nutrient levels. Farmers who are not regularly testing their soils cannot manage their nutrients as effectively as those who are. The hub has developed information on how to sample soil for analysis, and why it’s important.

The Soils for Profit project is running free soil sampling for farmers registering for a free advice visit with S4P for the first time. This will allow farmers to receive tailored advice on how to manage their soils and nutrient applications for optimal production.

Boreholes – Managing water on farm is becoming increasingly important due in part to climatic conditions and also to help future proof your business. If you are considering installing a borehole to reduce mains water costs, this page guides you through the principles, practices and permits needed.

For more information on how to manage water more effectively on your farm, please visit the Resource Efficiency 4 Farmers (R4F) pages and register for a free advice visit.

NVZ update – The clock is ticking down to 1 January 2012 when farmers in NVZs must have adequate slurry storage to comply with NVZ regulations. If you are considering building a new slurry store or are struggling to get to grips with the regulations, why not read the case studies of farmer’s experiences adapting their systems. For further guidance contact the Environment Agency on 01392 442 082.

Hub projects update

Low Carbon Farming project –The project has developed two additional technical factsheets on biochar, and comparing carbon calculator tools that are available to farmers. Following on from the two successful events held in September, the materials and presentations from the events can be viewed here.

Pasture Media project – The project has now launched its new website Pasture Promise TV. This site will be the portal for the television programmes that will be produced. The introductory film explaining more about the project, and the first film which covers dairy systems and the benefits of utilising pastures are now available to watch through the website.
