Footsteps to Copenhagen

"Footsteps to Copenhagen"

A Cornish Response to Climate Change- an update.

You may be receiving this email either as someone who attended the original meeting in Truro on 24 April, someone who couldn't attend but wanted to be kept informed or individuals/organisations who we think might be interested and willing to help financially.

Who are we?

On 24 April this year Truro Cathedral hosted a meeting of potentially interested individuals/organisations to discuss ways of
a) raising awareness amongst local people of the United Nations climate change negotiations to be held in December in Copenhagen, and
b) delivering a message from the people of Cornwall to our Government about the need to make the necessary commitment at those negotiations to help ensure global warming is kept within the critical 2oc

Following this meeting a planning group was set up, which consists of:

Canon Philip Lambert (Truro Cathedral/Transition Truro)
Claire Eason-Bassett (Event Cornwall)
Howard Curnow (Cornwall Wildlife Trust)
Bert Biscoe (County/City councillor)
Phyllis Reddock (WI)
Robin Sellwood (Transition Truro/Truro Cathedral)
Sarah Wetherill (Transition Truro)
Lindsay Southcombe (Transition Truro/FOE/Green Party)
Jemma Roberts (Coast)

What is being planned?
The following events are planned:

1 Friday 9 October - Cathedral event to raise awareness of the Copenhagen negotiations, deliver a clear message to local politicians, show level of local concern about climate change and promote a "Cornish declaration" for the climate change talks

2 Monday 19 - Friday 23 October - Schools undertake their own individual events/marches in their localities the week before half term

3 Saturday 24 October to Friday 30 October - Penzance to Saltash march/cycle ride starts in Penzance on Saturday 24 October and finishes in Saltash on Friday 30 October, averaging 7-8 miles a day

4 Local events to be encouraged during this week at each over night stopping off point and elsewhere

5 Saturday 31 October - Groups/organisations from the local events, and other interested individuals joint the marchers/cyclists in Saltash on Saturday 31 October crossing over the Tamar for a mass rally on the Plymouth side featuring prominent/high profile speakers and politicians. Delivery of the statement of intent/declaration

6 There will be a small envoy to London to deliver the "Cornish declaration". This could be on Saturday 5 December which is the date of the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition march in London.

Request for funding

How will this programme be delivered?
To ensure that this ambitious programme of events is a success and achieves maximum effect we are looking to employ a dedicated project worker who will need the necessary resources to deliver the project. We will be applying to various grant making bodies/sponsors for funding for
this project. We are anticipating total costs to be up to #30,000. Truro Cathedral will be acting as the accountable body for this project.

How can you help?
We are seeking a total of #1,500 by way of personal donations to act as match funding for formal grants/sponsorship. #600 of this "match funding" has already been pledged.

If you feel able to help please make cheques payable to "Chapter of Truro Cathedral (Footsteps to Copenhagen)" and send to The Cathedral Office, 14 St Mary's St, Truro TR1 2AH.

We will keep you informed of progress in this urgent and exciting project.
