UN Global Compact and the ten principles

UN Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. By doing so, business, as a primary driver of globalization, can help ensure that markets, commerce, technology and finance advance in ways that benefit economies and societies everywhere.

The Ten Principles
The UN Global Compact's ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption enjoy universal consensus

Human Rights

Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and
Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
Compact Integrity Measures -

United Kingdom
The Global Compact Network United Kingdom was established in June 2003. Since its launch, the network has been business-led and self-financing. Chairman Andrew Cave of The Royal Bank of Scotland, leads the Network with support from a Steering Committee, Secretariat, and working groups.

The network serves members through regular meetings to share best practices. In addition, working groups are actively engaged in reporting, small and medium-sized enterprises, communications, and liaising with other networks.

Key Goals

Provide UK signatories with a facility to consider and advance issues of mutual interest and concern
Provide a mechanism through which performance and reporting on UN Global Compact principles can be improved by mutual support
Enable participants to share and exchange good practice and experience
Provide input to the Global Compact on its future development and activity
Promote the Global Compact principles throughout the UK business community
Help promote and support the Global Compact worldwide
Since February 2006, the Secretariat for the UK Network has been provided by the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF), a not-for-profit organisation that promotes responsible business practices. For more information about IBLF visit

"The actors represented in Davos refuse to accept that;:

1) They do not understand the meaning of sustainability;
2) We cannot grow our way out of the unsustainable trajectory the planet is on;
3) We cannot count on technological innovation to lead us to the way out;
4) There is no invisible hand to guide uncoordinated actions in the economy;
5) the complex system that Orr speaks about [in his paper in 2003, entitled, "Walking North On A Southbound Train] ,cannot be managed and can only be governed by a completely different philosophical and practical framework; and
6) The two large institutions that have created this initiative are ill-equipped to be in charge as they are presently constituted.
