Dr David Fleming: 1940-2010

Dr David Fleming: 1940-2010.

It is with great sadness that I report the death of Dr David Fleming, who died peacefully in his sleep last night while visiting a friend in Amsterdam. David was a great inspiration to me, and he was also one of the funniest, kindest and most thoughtful people I have ever encountered. We have lost one of the giants of the Environment, Peak Oil and Transition movement.

David was born in 1940, he studied history at Oxford, worked in marketing, PR and advertising and then was one of the founders of the Ecology Party, later the Green Party. He served as its economics spokesman and press secretary between 1977 and 1980. He subsequently worked as an independent consultant in environmental policy and more recently was the originator of the concept of Tradable Energy Quotas (http://www.transitionnc.org/node/50/418#comment-418) and author of the ‘Lean Guide to Nuclear Power’, among other things. He was also one of the early writers on peak oil.

I met David for the first time at the initial PowerSwitch meeting in London back in 2004. He was very kind, mild mannered man with sharp intellect. Even at that time he had his TEQ system worked out in some detail and it is a great shame that we collectively did not managed to get that widely accepted and adopted.

Perhaps the best monument we can build for him would be to get TEQ adopted in some form by some level of Government.

I’m sure that everybody who ever met David will join me in extending my condolences to his friends and family.
