Allotments

Whilst I applaud the contribution that Councils and Government can and do make in the provision of areas for allotments, contaminated land can be an issue. Many may not be aware that areas of the UK have higher than recommended levels of contaminants in the soil in the form of naturally occuring products such as Chromium, Lead and Arsenic to name just three. In certain areas where a history for example of mining waste disposal occurs the link that can result between these toxins and the human receptor is considered by the Enviroment Agency to be high. This results in builders for example having to carry out costly remedial works to garden sites to avoid this possible link. However I would add through personal experience that I own a number of acres here in Cornwall, that is classed as agricultural land, which shows what is to be considered dangerously high levels of such toxins. We graze horses but the neighdouring land is used for milk and meat production. Food ( excuse the pun) for thought perhaps.
