Future of Smaller Settlements in Cornwall

Please pass on to your own group

This appears to be significant to the way the Council will be planning actions for villages throughout Cornwall
it represents a major opportunity to move Resilience issues up the agenda

I hope each group will be able to find a willing volunteer to get involved at each stage of this process it can only be to the good!!

Cornwall Council

Committee: Cabinet – Planning Policy Advisory Panel
Date: 14 January 2010
Title: Planning for the Role and and Future of Smaller
Settlements in Cornwall

1. Developing an evidence base is central to the preparation of
Development Plan Documents (DPDs) and underpins the generation
and testing of options. Establishing an appropriate evidence base is
key to developing a justifiable plan – PPS12 emphasises that DPDs
must be founded on robust and credible evidence; the Planning
Inspectorate will closely examine how the content of DPDs are
justified by up-to-date evidence; and the assemblage of evidence is a
legal requirement under the EU Strategic Environmental Assessment
Directive which applies to all DPDs.

2. The potential scope and nature of policy in the Core Strategy will
continue to evolve over the next year. In light of previous discussions of this Panel it is reasonable to expect the Core Strategy to include town specific policies and criteria based settlement policies for the smaller towns and villages. To achieve this, we need to understand the roles and particularly the sustainability of smaller settlements in terms of their future housing development, transport infrastructure and employment provision. Consultants were commissioned in June 2009 to undertake this study, and will give a short presentation to Members on its findings.
