Growers pool skills to produce veg boxes

This month has seen the Camel and Lamorna groups produce thei r maiden vegetable boxes, containing in-season items including potatoes, cabbage and cucumber. More exotic produce, such as broad beans and Swiss chard, have also been grown and distributed.

The Camel group, based in Wadebridge, distributed dozens of vegetable boxes to members in its first week – and chairman Charlotte Barry is delighted with the results.

She said: "We are terribly pleased that sharing time, skills and expertise is paying off. The whole point is that people get together to share produce, and volunteers have been working hard in all weathers to produce the boxes. It is fantastic."

The Camel division was the first Community Supported Agriculture group to form in Cornwall , after a meeting with the Soil Association at the end of last year. It now has nearly 40 members, all paying £24 a year to help provide seeds and tools. Members can also buy a vegetable box every Friday from the group's allotment.
