DEA Global Learning Charter

The Charter makes the argument that the global challenges we face can’t just be left to technical and policy fixes, but needs a mass campaign of education and citizen involvement, and that this is a challenge for all of society’s institutions. A broad coalition of signatories to the Charter are committing to play their part in helping society to innovate and respond to global issues such as international poverty and climate change through helping citizens learn more about the issues and how they can do something about them.

A wide variety of organisations are signing up including:

· Businesses who as part of their corporate social responsibility programmes are educating employees and consumers about environmental sustainability;

· Schools and colleges, who are educating young people to think more globally;

· Non-governmental organisations who work to educate the public about global issues;

· Arts and culture organisations who explore global issues in their work;

· Trade unions who engage in workforce education about the environment or development;

· Local authorities who are working to develop intercultural understanding and community cohesion.

The Charter, which will be launched at a formal reception in parliament in the New Year, offers your organisation the opportunity to signify support for education on global issues, to join a diverse network of like-minded organisations, and to raise the profile of the work that you do in this area.

All signatory organisations will be invited to the launch reception and, for those who would like to get more closely involved, a range of activities will follow the launch including:

· Policy round tables on the contribution education and learning can make to addressing global challenges of sustainability, poverty and cohesion.

· Practice-sharing sessions to support signatory organisations who wish to develop, extend or share their work in this area.

The Charter is being organised by DEA, a charity that promotes education about global issues (http://www.dea.org.uk). A number of high profile organisations have already signed up, including: the Eden Project, Oxfam, the Royal Geographical Society, the Trades Union Congress and National Youth Agency. For more information see: http://www.dea.org.uk/global_charter

This is an excellent opportunity for you to showcase the work you are doing to educate about global issues in order to promote a better world.

The Charter and terms of reference for signatory organisations are attached. If your organisation would like to sign up, or to discuss any aspect of the Charter or DEA’s work further, please contact Max Hogg ( max.hogg@dea.org.uk / 020 7922 7939). Please do pass the Charter, terms of reference and this invitation on any of your partners who also do work in this area.

Yours sincerely,

Hetan Shah
