Tamar Energy Community
A new cooperative has arrived in town! We've set up an energy cooperative for Tavistock, Callington and surrounding areas. Everyone locally can join Tamar Energy Community by paying £1 as soon as membership opens.

This is an important step for the development of community energy locally. We’re all spending a lot of money on heating and powering our homes (around £16m per year or £44,000 a day across Tavistock area). With much of this spend with big power companies the majority of the benefit leaves our local economy like a leaking bucket. By working together we can start to stem this flow. Find out more here.

If you’re interested in getting involved please let us know. We’re recruiting for a range of skills to join the managing team and get us off the ground!

Cosy Devon
Free and reduced cost energy saving measures for householders across Devon
Launched at the end of July 2014, Cosy Devon offers free loft insulation and cavity wall insulation to private householders (owners, landlords and tenants) across Devon and free loft top ups to householders in areas designated as low income. In other areas loft top ups will cost £149.00.
There is also the chance for a free boiler repair or replacement for private householders in receipt of certain benefits.
A contribution to the costs of external wall insulation may also be possible for certain privately owned properties.

You can register your interest in Cosy Devon by getting in touch at with your name, contact details and postcode (07969-569-444). As a voluntary community group Transition Tavistock will earn a small fee for each completed measure. This will help fund our further support in your community.

Green Deal Home Improvement Fund - surprise withdrawal
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced the surprise withdrawal of the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF) on Thursday July 24th after only a few weeks in operation. The scheme proved to be overwhelmingly successful and was in danger of outspending its £120m budget. The press release is available here.

Tavistock & District - Local Economic Blueprint
Following the success of the Local Economic Blueprint development in Totnes our Tavistock project has kicked off and will be completed at the end of March 2015.

We're working to understand the amount of our ‘hard earned’ money spent on goods and services which leaves the local economy with minimal local benefit; and putting in place a supported plan to enable increasing proportions of our needs to be fulfilled through local supply chains ... to strengthen our local communities and stimulate jobs and enterprise. We're looking at local food, renewable energy and domestic retrofit.

Tavistock College Solar School
Solar panels installed at the college would really help make a dent in their significant power costs and enable savings to be invested in further energy reduction measures.
