Mebyon Kernow again asks for devolution in Cornwall

Mebyon Kernow again asks for devolution in Cornwall after the UK agrees more powers to Wales

05/11/2013

MK leader Dick Cole recalls 50,000 people requested the establishment of a Cornish Assembly in 2001
Immediately after the UK Government has unveiled plans to transfer financial powers in Wales, the main pro-autonomy Cornish party has again asked for devolution for Cornwall. Leader of the Mebyon Kernow Dick Cole has said Cornwall "deserves" a "new democratic settlement - just like Wales".

One of four MK Council of Cornwall members, Coles considers differential treatment during the last 20 years by the UK to Scotland and Wales, on the one hand, and Cornwall on the other. While Scotland and Wales have attained self-government, Cole says, Cornwall has seen the UK Government reject the request for a Cornish Assembly in 2001. The request had the support of 50,000 people (approximately 10% of Cornwall's population).
