WREN at Ashden Awards

Excitement is building at WREN as we await the decision of the judges for this year’s Ashden Awards. From 26 finalists, a total of 14 winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Royal Geographical Society in London this Thursday 20th June, with prizes to be awarded of £10,000 - £20,000. The awards will be webcast on from 7pm tomorrow.

The Ashden Awards bring to light ground-breaking green energy champions in the UK and developing world and inspire others to follow.
Since they were set up in 2001 they’ve helped more than 140 sustainable energy pioneers develop their work. Today the Awards are an internationally recognised yardstick for excellence in the field of green energy.

The UK finalists include some of the UK’s most exciting cleantech innovators, sustainable travel organisations that are getting commuters to kick their car habit; market towns that are showing local residents how to take back control of their energy (that's us!) and schools that are helping create a whole new generation of sustainable energy champions.

Sarah Butler-Sloss, Founder Director of Ashden, said:
“Some say sustainable energy is a luxury we can’t afford. But it’s a huge opportunity. From Cumbria to Cape Verde, our 2013 finalists are showing that what’s good for the planet is also good for people, good for business, and good for economies. Together they are helping build a sustainable energy revolution.”

Keep your fingers crossed for WREN.

Award for Community Energy

Creating an energy-smart town

Cornwall has some of the best renewable resources in Europe, including sun, wind, tide, wave, geothermal and biomass – and yet most of the energy that towns like Wadebridge use comes from centralised energy companies.

Since its creation in 2011 this co-operatively owned social enterprise has rapidly galvanised residents and businesses in the 8,000-strong Cornish market town to get involved in generating their own energy – and saving energy.

With one in ten people in Wadebridge now members of WREN and small business from bike shops to laundrettes installing renewable energy, the town provides a shining example of how people can take back control of their energy, increase self-reliance and tackle climate change – and save money to boot.
