10:10:10 and all that

Dear 10:10ers,

I can't stay in denial any longer – it's time to face the facts. Today I grugdingly conceded that summer 2010 might – just might – be starting to wind down.

As the mercury drops, the days get darker and the kids start back at school, driving starts to look a lot more tempting. We're all for bikes and buses, of course, but sometimes only a car will do. The trick is to make sure the carbon tyre-print of those journeys is kept as low as possible. Here's how:

1. Drive smarter

The way you drive makes a big difference, and we've put together a tip sheet (pdf) to help you save on petrol and cut up to 10% of your driving emissions. It's just one of dozens of new resources we've created for 10:10:10 – our global 'Day of Doing' on 10 October.

2. Share a lift

Of course, one full car is a better bet, carbon-wise, than lots of half-empty ones. But it's not always easy to link lift-less passengers with passenger-less drivers. Enter liftshare. The free 10:10 liftshare scheme plugs into a 350,000-strong national network, so you're bound to find someone going your way. Click here to give it a go.

3. Join the club

You know that old urban myth about city-dwellers never being more than 6ft from a rat? Well, it's a bit like that with car club vehicles. But less disgusting, obviously. Car clubs give you easy access to a car without the hassle of actually owning one. On average, each vehicle replaces 26 privately owned cars and cuts down on unnecessary car journeys.

You can find the service closest to you on the independent Carplus website, which has a full list of car clubs and locations in the UK.

4. Think before you buy

If you do own a car, upgrading to a more efficient model might seem like the way forward. But because making a car can create as much pollution as several years of driving it, this is a trickier question than a straightforward MPG comparison would suggest. Luckily, our friends at Prince Charles' Start campaign have put together a clever online tool that helps you work out whether it's time for a change. Find out more.

That's all for now. However you're travelling this autumn, stay safe!

Malachi and the 10:10 team

P.S. In my last email I asked for your 10:10 stories, and I'm still digging my way out of the avalanche that ensued! Don't worry if you don't see yours in the hall of fame yet – I'm adding them as fast as I can copy and paste.
