26Jan2013: Modernising Money

“Modernising Money”

Saturday 26th January 2013

This year’s conference ‘Modernising Money’ will focus on why we need to reform the monetary system, and how we can make it happen.

We are living in exceptional times, with the financial system, and the ecosystems on which we depend, at the point of collapse. Changes to policy or regulation are not able to get to the root of the problem. Over the next few years we must make the case for systemic change and put forward viable alternatives. Our conference will focus on how we can do this.

This conference will be more interactive than ever before and will consist of a combination of lectures, workshops and some short videos from selected high profile supporters.

There will be presentations on the role of the monetary system in the current financial and environmental crises, and its wider influence on businesses, households and society. Followed by a discussion on Positive Money’s proposal for reforming the system, and the effects it would have.

The practical sessions and workshops will focus on how to bring about reform. Positive Money will not be able to achieve this alone – we will need to build a wider movement among campaign groups, NGOs, academics and policy makers. We will use your ideas and experience to identify partners and opportunities, and develop our messages and campaigns. You will also have an opportunity to practise key messages and responses to objections, opposition and misunderstanding.

Short video messages from some of our key supporters who aren’t able to join us, including Caroline Lucas, Herman Daly, and John Perkins, will be shown throughout the day. Also, Positive Money’s new book ‘Modernising Money’, which expands the themes of the conference, will be launched and available to buy.

Please note that this conference will focus on our proposals and campaign strategy, rather than the way the current system works. If you are new to the subject, we suggest that you watch this video or its full version before the conference.

Lunch provided by Hackney Grower’s Kitchen (vegetarian and organic)

Lunch(optional) will be provided by Hackney Grower’s Kitchen, and will be healthy organic vegetarian food. (See the photo to the right).

For those who wish to stay we will then go to the pub around the corner where you can continue to talk with other interesting people active in the area of monetary reform.

We’ll be releasing details of confirmed speakers over the next few weeks.
