30Mar2012: The Island President

I am holding a premiere screening of the new film 'The Island President' on Friday March 30th at 7.30pm in the Gallery at the Eden Project.

The film documents the the first year in office of former president of the Maldives, Mohammed Nasheed, and is a must for anyone who cares about climate change, disappearing island nations & democracy. See the link at the end of this email to view the trailer.

As former climate change advisors to the Maldivian Government it is fantastic to be able to show the film at Eden and I am very grateful for their support.

The tickets will be £5 on the door, this screening is not for profit but I need to charge in order to cover the cost of the screening license. This money goes to the film distributor, helping the filmmakers to reach a wider audience.

If you are interested in attending the screening then please email me so I can get an idea of numbers and make sure you all have seats!

Kind regards,

Carli Summer.

The Island President - Synopsis

The Island President tells the story of former President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced—the literal survival of his country and everyone in it.

The deposed president is famous for his efforts to fight climate change, but his lifelong struggle has been for democracy. After bringing democracy to the Maldives after thirty years of despotic rule, Nasheed is now faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable.

On February 7th 2012, Mohammed Nasheed resigned the Presidency under the threat of violence in a Coup D'Etat perpetrated by security forces loyal to the former dictator. The film is the story of his first year in office.
