Forest Gardening Work Shop

There will be a Forest Gardening work shop on 2 October, 2011. This course promises to be informative educational and fun while revealing both the concepts and practical application of the practice of forest gardening in our temperate climate.

The principles of Forest Gardening (FG) are that everything is edible, medicinal, of high ecological value, or of some use to mankind.

The result is (after the initial planting process and the occasional harvesting of root vegetables) you have created, virtually, a no-dig garden.

The plants come from the best of the most suitable species from temperate zones across the world, and will include both familiar and unfamiliar species.

Plant species will range from 100mm up to 17 metres in height, and will include large, medium and small trees, shrubs, ground cover, herbaceous, root crops and climbing plants.

This multi-dimensional layered approach means you reduce the build up of pests and diseases (and their chemical management) so often experienced in our modern mono crop culture of growing fields of cabbages or barley.

This style of production, when working in harmony, does not need the input of man-made fertilizers.

Although it’s recognised that FG is not a substitute for modern farming techniques, (that are designed to feed the masses), it is clear that it’s got its contribution to make particularly as it can be applied to areas that are not suitable for tractors to work safely. Its principles could be used more widely once oil has become too expensive or too scarce to make current farming techniques with a tractor viable or possible.

Many of the principles are alien to the horticultural training techniques taught in modern day colleges, and we all need to step back and have a rethink in order to fully appreciate the finer points that Forest Gardening has to offer.

Forest Gardening principles can be applied to even the smallest back garden up to 10s of acres.

This course on FG will cover:

A brief history of fg
Choosing a site
Soil types
Possibilities and potentials of FG for you
The seven layered system
Plant groups.
The principles of design and construction
Boundaries
Grass management
Planting techniques
The use of grazing animals
Fertility
Mulches and much more
