3-4Sep2011: Hip Wiggler Invitational Surf Competition

Britain’s best Single Fin Longboarders gathering to compete at the Hip Wiggler Invitational Surf Competition in aid of Surf Action.

The 2010 British Longboard Champion James Parry is bringing together Britain’s finest traditional longboard surfers to inspire the British surfing scene. The Hip Wiggler Invitational will see 16 surfers compete in a competition that is based more upon having fun and expressing individual styles.

The event will take place at Gwithian Beach, near Hayle on the Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September and will provide an opportunity for spectators to watch a display of exceptional surfing that is being held in aid of local charity Surf Action.

Competitors will be riding heavier, single fin traditional longboards, with no leashes, as surfers used to do back in the 1960’s when this type of surfing reached its absolute pinnacle. The surfers of that era influenced the surfing of today and this event pays tribute to this heritage.
Sponsors of the event include Insight51 Clothing, Slide 65 Surfboards, Sunset Surf and Vans.

The day will also include beach activities, BBQ, and evening entertainment at Sunset Surf from ‘30 Pound of Bone’, ‘The Diamond Family Archive’, ‘King James’ plus guests.

Organiser James Parry commented “My vision for this contest is to bring the best classic longboarders together to inspire, influence and educate. This competition is about style, fluidness, power, creativity and using the entire length of a surfboard whilst in perfect trim with the wave.”

The event will begin at 9am but surfing will commence when the conditions are deemed perfect for the ultimate expression of traditional longboarding.
James Parry continued “This will be a great event that will really show the talent we have in the UK and mirror what is happening elsewhere in the surfing community around the globe”.
