Sustainable waste strategy for Cornwall

Letter received from STIG:
----------------------------------------------------
We are writing to you, as someone who could be an elected member of Cornwall Council.

It is our hope that you are already aware of the controversy surrounding the County Council's waste contract with SITA and the recent failed planning application for an incinerator near St Dennis and the withdrawn application for waste transfer station at Scorrier.

We appreciate that you may have your own views on the very emotive subject of waste but hope that, if elected, you will work with local communities towards a Waste Strategy for Cornwall which excluded Incineration and moves away from Landfill.

In recent months, some people have tried to suggest that waste management in Cornwall is either about landfill or incineration. This is not the case - there are many modern, clean and proven technologies for waste treatment such as anaerobic digestion and autoclave separation which would benefit both the Cornish economy and the local environment.

We intend to send more detailed information about the issue of waste management to all the councilors on the new authority in early June. In the meantime, more information can be obtained from our website.

May we wish you all the best for your campaign.

We hope that the new Council, with your support, will protect and enhance Cornwall's environment for the future.

Yours sincerely,

K.H. Rickard STIG CHAIR
