bargain food waste digester

Grab a bargain before 30 September to help yourself, the environment and your garden

Cornwall’s residents have until 30 September to grab a bargain food waste digester to recycle their household food waste.

A range of composters are available at a discounted price as the scheme, launched last April by Recycle for Cornwall and the Waste Resources Action Programme to encourage households in Cornwall to compost their household food waste, draws to a close.

The scheme offers massive savings on the list price of a variety of composters designed to recycle household food waste. Those still available are:-

Green Johannas which are a food waste digester similar to a standard compost bin and will take all food waste and garden waste; they are only suitable for households with a garden. Available for £20 (normally £87).

Green Cones which are food waste digesters rather than compost bins; they take food waste but no garden waste. They are suitable for people with a very small garden or those who already have a traditional compost bin system. Available for £20 (normally £62).

Compost bins for all non cooked food waste and garden waste from £20.

Prices include delivery to your door with kitchen caddies also available for just £2 when a digester or compost bin is purchased.

The Council was selling wormeries which are suitable for people who have no garden at all. The wormeries proved to be so popular that more than 800, almost four times the expected number, have been sold since the beginning of the scheme in April and have now sold out completely.

Cornwall Council cabinet member for waste and environment Julian German said: “Food waste is a real problem. It is expensive to dispose of and produces harmful methane when it breaks down in landfill. But it can be turned into a useful resource when it is recycled as compost for the garden. The Council is offering these discounted composters to help everyone to dispose of their food waste at home.”

Esther O’Bearagh, Waste Projects & Awareness Officer said: “These new composters and food waste digesters are only available at these subsidised prices until the end of September. Recycle for Cornwall has helped thousands of residents to begin composting and this has helped to divert many tonnes of garden and food waste from landfill. Now we can all take our composting a stage further by using one of these new digesters to dispose of our household food waste including cooked food or meat waste”.

Those interested in managing more of their food waste at home and in purchasing one of the units please either ring 0845 076 0223 quoting CAVE9 or visit www.recyclenow.com/compost.
